How does Just Play work?

Part 1: Before sign up

We get it, joining Just Play can be daunting!
But - it may be one of the best things you ever do 🙌

Here are some things you may like to know before signing up to a team (maybe grab a cuppa or a snack, and strap yourself in - it’s a long one)👇

How do skill levels work?

90% of our games are social level, so you don’t need to be a gun player to join Just Play. If you are looking for something more competitive, we’ll flag higher division leagues as ‘competitive’ so you know what to sign up for.

If you’re a complete beginner, we definitely have comps for you too! We’ll tag certain comps as ‘beginner friendly’, otherwise feel free to check in with our Customer Support team and we can help you find a suitable league.

If you’re anywhere in between, we’ve got tons available for you. Our social leagues are designed to be light-hearted games where you don’t have to take the competition too seriously (but you wouldn’t mind winning from time to time 😉) Ultimately, it’s a great way for you to get back in the game in a low-stakes way.

How are teams allocated?

We allocate teams based on a few factors - including skill level, and age. A lot of our venues have multiple teams in a competition, so it takes a bit of magic behind the scenes to make sure you’re on the team that’s right for you.

We try to get you playing with people in your age group and skill level, but if there are only enough players for one team, you might end up with some players a bit older/younger or more/less experienced - I can guarantee this is just as (and sometimes even more) fun!

We do our best to consider everybody’s preferred positions when allocating teams (we’ll ask your preference in your player survey after signing up). However, Just Play do not allocate player positions - that is decided by the team at the game. On occasion, players may be required to play in positions they don’t usually to help out the team & make sure everyone gets a fun game.

Age groups

Usually our players are aged 20 - 35 years, but there are heaps of players outside that range. As long as you’re over 18 you can join a Just Play team. If there are multiple Just Play teams in a competition, we’ll allocate players based on skill preference and age. If this isn’t possible, it’s just as fun with a mix anyway!

Joining with a friend

Joining with a friend is a great idea! Not only do you have someone to hold your hand through the scary bit (going to your first game) but they’re also a great accountability partner.

It’s super straightforward to join with a mate (or partner, or colleague…). You’ll both need to sign up individually, so make sure you’re signing up for the same league.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll need to add each other’s names in the ‘friends’ section of your player profile so we’ll know to allocate you together. Make sure you put each other’s full names as we can’t always find your friend if you only include first name!

Can’t find the player profile? No worries, shoot us a message and we can help you out.

How do I know who’s in my team?

You’ll be able to see your teammates once we’ve allocated you to a team. This doesn’t always happen right away, often it’s closer to the start of the season.

So, if you sign up for a league that’s starting in a month’s time, you might not be allocated until a week before the start date. This is to make sure everyone has loads of time to sign up. Once you’ve been allocated to a team, you’ll be able to see your team on the game details page.

Number of games in a season

You can see the number of games in a season on any listing. (If you can’t see it, you may need to make an account or log in to make this information visible). The number of games listed is our best estimate and these can change for a large number of reasons, including: byes, grading games, finals, forfeits etc.

Some competition providers run seasons that are 16+ games in length. For the purposes of registration we split any seasons that are 16+ games into two parts. We do this for 2 main reasons:

👉 To keep the upfront registration costs down. With our seasons running at a per game cost, splitting the season in two makes it more affordable for our players.

👉 To provide some flexibility for people who can’t commit to a whole 16+ week season upfront.

Not all our seasons are split seasons - in fact, most of them aren’t. If you’d like to find out if the league you’re looking at is part of a split season, shoot us a message and we can look into it for you.

Most of the time it doesn’t make a difference if your season is split or not. One some rare occasions, the team playing the second half of the 16 week season may need a higher/lower grading, but most of our teams play at a social level so stay in the right division.

Still having some trouble reading the league listing? We’ve put together a League Listing Guide that might help 👉

So what happens next? Great question. Check out part two for what to expect after sign up 👇
